From Michael Brown, “This is why we become annoying to others when we enter the state of being that is very helpful, because in this state we are blinded to the predicament of our own reflections and projections; that we are the ones needing the most help.”

When I was in the Peace Corps back in about 1968, I was in Bihar, Hariana State, in India. In that place, at that time, there was a drought and famine and the people were living off of wheat donated by the US AID program, as I recall. They were basically starving and thirsty. What was interesting was that in the other places we had been in India the people were friendly and loving and all asked about the death of JFK; in Bihar the people would glare and acted resentful and unfriendly.

We took that as people who are so heavily reliant on others for their survival tend to resent it and that made sense. It never occurred to me that we were “blinded to the predicament of our own reflections and projections; and that we were the ones needing the most help.” Which, no doubt, was true. It also never occurred to me, until now, that they were probably very hungry and scared for survival and were just looking like people look like when they’re in that condition and that I was projecting my own fear and anxiety onto them.
